What we've learned about sleep, told one product at a time.
Simmons started in 1870 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Zalmon G. Simmons was running a wooden-products factory when a customer who couldn't afford his train fare paid him in woven-wire mattresses instead. Simmons studied the mattresses, recognized that the engineering was sound but the manufacturing was clumsy, and built machinery to mass-produce them. Within a generation he had built the largest mattress manufacturer in the country.
That's the founding story, and the parts of it that are documented happen to also be the parts that matter most. Simmons didn't start with sleep — he started with a manufacturing problem. How do you engineer something that most people slept on but no one had really designed yet. Every innovation that came after followed the same logic.
The pocketed coil
Most mattresses in the early twentieth century were filled with cotton, horsehair, or single-piece coil systems that transferred every movement from one side of the bed to the other. The Simmons engineering team developed a system that wrapped each spring in its own fabric pocket, allowing the coils to compress independently of one another. The result was a mattress where one sleeper's movement didn't disturb the other — and a level of personalized support no one had achieved before.
The Beautyrest line, built on that pocketed-coil system, launched in 1925 and became the first nationally branded mattress in America. It stayed the category leader for decades. The pocketed coil is still the foundation of premium spring mattresses today, ninety-plus years later.
The Hide-A-Bed
In the mid-twentieth century, Simmons developed a sofa-bed mechanism that became so dominant the brand name turned into the common noun for the entire category. The Hide-A-Bed wasn't a sleep innovation so much as a furniture innovation — but it established a pattern: Simmons engineered sleep into pieces of furniture that didn't look like beds.
That pattern is exactly what SomniCline is doing today, more than seventy years later. A chair, on the outside. A sleep system, on the inside.
Materials, foam, and the modern recovery system
Through the second half of the twentieth century, Simmons led or matched every major mattress innovation: high-density foam systems, multi-layer constructions, motion isolation, edge support, climate-control materials. The company expanded into adjustable bases as hospitals began specifying head-and-foot articulation for patient recovery — and many of the foam, frame, and articulation technologies that now live in the SomniCline trace directly back to product lines Simmons developed for medical applications.
This is the part of the company's history that doesn't show up in mattress advertising but matters most to the SomniCline. Hospital-grade adjustable bases need to hold a precise angle through ten thousand cycles without sagging, drifting, or wearing the motor. The engineering disciplines that produce that durability are exactly what a sleep recovery recliner needs.
Why heritage matters here
A 150-year-old company isn't automatically a better company. But a 150-year-old company that has stayed in one category that whole time has had time to learn things that newer brands haven't. Coil behavior under repeated load. Foam degradation across decades, not years. Fabric performance through hot rooms, humid rooms, and the rooms older adults actually live in. Frame engineering for products that get used every day for ten thousand days.

The next chapter
